Out of the
Desert Southwest made famous by the Grand Canyon comes the breathtaking
Arizona Onyx. It is the only domestically quarried and fabricated
onyx in the United States. Arizona Onyx is also the largest
single deposit of onyx in the world.
As the crown jewel of the marble family, onyx is formed by a mixture of
clays, carbonates and other minerals compressed and heated deep within
the earth. This intense pressure and heat, results in fissures,
that in turn produce visible veins of color.
Colors range from milky white, honeys, reds, greens, black and
oranges.
The quarry was first discovered in the late 1800’s. It was Henry
Ford who put this quarry on the map. He chose the jade green color to
be mass produced in spheres to be used in his luxury automobiles at the
turn of the century.
Since then, due to lack of technology, the quarry laid dormant.
The owners Ray and Liliana Bosiljcic imported state of the art
equipment which allows for precision cutting and fabrication.
